Scope and Contents

The files contain information on a faculty seminar on South Asia Studies held in 1970, a description of the Hindi Institute held at Davidson College in 1972, news releases concerning various aspects of the South Asian Program, the general brochure on the South Asian Program, and a description of the Festival of India held on campus in 1985-86 and the South Asian Festival held in 1971. There also is a report on the development of the Program written in 1970 and a folder of proposals for creating the program including one on a physical science project undertaken cooperatively by Davidson College and an Indian College," and one to "encourage the development of non-western studies in the Charlotte Mecklenburg School System." There is also a document evaluating the current programs related to South Asian studies, c 1970."

Biographical / Historical

Dr.Fred Gaige was hired in 1969 to come to Davidson as a political science teacher and as director of a South Asian Studies program. Working with faculty committees including the Non-Western Studies and Foreign Studies (later International Education) Committees to identify current classes and expand the curriculum for South Asian Studies. The program also offered faculty seminars in India. Gaige left the college in 1974. Tonia Devon served as director from 1974 to 1979 when Job Thomas became the director.
