Scope and Contents

The records consist of departmental administrative files, committee minutes, reports to the North Carolina Department of Education, documents for accreditation visits and project files. Photographs of student teachers can be found in the Curricula- Education folders and there is a departmental T-shirt in the Artifact Collection (A-620).

Biographical / Historical

Davidson College began offering teacher certification in 1966. The program offers certification only for secondary teachers in the areas of Foreign Languages, English, Mathematics, and Social Studies and is accredited by the North Carolina State Department of Education and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education(NCATE). As part of the certification program, the department offers foundation courses, psychology courses, and other preservice coursework, including student teaching. The Teacher Education Committee consists of representatives from each area of certification. The July Experience program was developed out of the Teacher Education office in 1976.
