The Project for Theological Exploration of Vocation is also known as the Lilly Program due to its origins. The program was a 4-year, $1.9 million grant given to the college by the Lilly Endowment, which is a nationally recognized endowment created in 1937 for funding projects in religion, community development, and education. Davidson College was one of 20 recipients nationwide. The Lilly Proposal Committee was chaired by Dr. John Kuykendall, class of 1959. Tim Beach-Verhey served as the inaugural director of the Lilly Program. After receiving the grant, the college has used it to encourage students to consider entering the ministry and explores religious vocation. One of the original programs of the program focused on sophomores with a retreat entitled Vocational Vertigo. The fund has also been used to sponsor the Lilly Lecture Series, Alumni summer seminars, and the Lilly Resident Scholarship, which was first awarded in 2002. The scholarship helped defray the cost of tuition at Davidson their senior year, funds a summer internship, and paid for the first year of seminary. The Lilly Program was slated to last four years, or as long as the grant lasted, but the college has extended the funding through 2009. The program was integrated with the Chaplain's Office and some of the programs were continued.
