The Department of Public Safety and Campus Police is responsible for overseeing working with Fire and Safety inspectors, protecting the lives and property of the members of and visitors to the College community, and enforcing state, local, and College regulations. The first campus officer was Edgar "Cop" Linker. On staff from 1939 to 1972, Linker saw the student enrollment grow from 650 to 1087. After his retirement, the college worked with the town of Davidson to share police services. A Student Government Association Security Committee was formed and worked with the director of Physical Plant to assist the town police in providing security for the campus. The town managed both departments until 1978 when the college reestablished its own public safety office. Jackie Hughes served as director from 1977-1989, Ray Thrower from 1989-1997, Ricky Moore from 1997-1998, Samuel McKelvey from 1998-200, Fountain Walker from 2003-2010, and Adrienne Murray, 2010-2012. Todd Sigler became director in 2013.
