Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

The collection consists of biographical information, correspondence, school work, financial records, clippings and invitations. The biographical information includes newsclippings, a copy of her eulogy and also information about William Richardson, a long-time suitor. The correspondence from 1907 to 1911 is primarily between Louise and her family while she was attending Peace College. She discusses college life and gets news about Davidson events. The correspondence between 1911 and 1917 is primarily with friends and her suitor, William Holt Richardson. Richardson was working as a newspaper reporter and makes references to world events, such as the sinking of the Lusitania. Later correspondence is with friends and family. There are separate folders for correspondence related to her brief teaching career and her work with the Peace College yearbook, the Lotus. There are also postcards (housed in Box 3) that complement and continue the correspondence in the letters. The calling cards are examples of cards left by visitors. They include printed and handwritten cards. The financial records are incomplete but do reflect her interests in investments and the rental properties she owned in Charlotte and Davidson, NC. There is a notebook from 1906 that lists her childhood accounts and an early draft of a will. The collection also include examples of her school work and two essays written by Sloan and three accompanying photographs for the Whitefield tree piece. There are additional photographs of Louise as a child and in her later years.
