Scope and Contents

The collection consists of correspondence (1894-1955), music notebooks (1896), printed materials (1922 - 1956 and undated), and financial materials (1882-1884). The correspondence includes a request to accompany Miss Thompson to church and a letter discussing her father. The music notebooks are Thompson's student handwritten exercise books. The printed material includes recital programs and newpaper clippings about Thompson. The financial material includes receipts and advertisements for organs from McSmith House Music Company and J. N. Thompson's store.

Biographical / Historical

Hattie Thompson was born in Davidson, North Carolina. She was the daughter of John Nelson Thompson and Carry McGaw. She attended Statesville Female College for a year until the death of her father in 1892. She began working for Davidson College in 1914 as the assistant to the Treasurer. She was also organist at the Davidson College Presbyterian Church and gave piano lessons. She retired from Davidson College in 1946 but remained active in many social activities until her death in 1956.
