Scope and Contents The collection consists of a printed copy of the Rev. J. Jones Smyth's address given at Davidson in 1855 and four documents. The printed speech has handwritten notes on the back cover. The documents include a list of Davidson College students with grade averages for the period 1865 to 1868, a recipe for Mothers Bitters, an 1870 employment contract between Bell and patrons of Davidson River Academy, and an 1871 donation solication letter from the Eumenean Literary Society.

The bulk of the collection consists of 27 covers with various Davidson College, N.C. postmarks and includes 6 illuminated covers decorated with engravings of the Old Chambers Building. Three additional covers with Davidson College, N.C. postmarks are mounted individually on sheets with notes and were assembled by Paul Freeland (1925).
