 Sub-Group
Identifier: RG13.02

Scope and Contents

The collection consists of Davidson College catalogs from 1842 to the present. The earliest known catalog was printed in 1842. Photocopies of the catalogs for 1842-1847 have been bound and are also available in the Davidsoniana Room (Call number D 021 A18 1842-1850). The catalogs contain information about the Trustees, Faculty, Adminstration and students as well as descriptions of the courses of study offered, student activities, and scholarships. At several times throughout the history of the college, Davidson has offered summer classes to its students. In 1909, Davidson offered preparatory classes for prospective students and students needing extra help before college classes began. Between 1938 and 1978, Davidson offered summer classes to its regular students. By 1983, however, any form of formal summer school had ended although students still were encouraged to take contract courses or to enroll in one of the college's summer programs such as the Cambridge University Summer Program. The collection also contains brochures for summer programs for 1909, 1938-1978, and 1983.

Biographical / Historical

Miss Cornelia Shaw was elected as Librarian and Registrar on May 28, 1907. Prior to 1907, the duties of Registrar were handled by faculty members and the president. Although primarily responsible for the library, Shaw served as registrar until 1921 when Frederick Hengeveld added the duties to his work as basketball and baseball coach. In 1930, the Registrar's position became full-time, although the Registrar was also designated Secretary to the Faculty until 1939. In 1940, the position was expanded to include Admissions and the Registrar served as Director of Admissions and Registrar until 1964. Admissions became a separate office in 1965. Frederick Hengeveld filled the position of Registrar from 1921 to 1966. Upon Hengeveld's retirement, Professor Jay Ostwalt became Associate Dean of the Faculty and Registrar. Richard Burts succeeded Ostwalt in 1971 and held the position of Registrar until 1986. Sue Ross became the fifth Registrar in 1986 and Polly Griffin became the sixth Registrar in 1993. The Registrar oversees all aspects of course registration, classroom assignments, student academic records, and transcripts of Davidson academic records. The Registrar also evaluates transcripts for transfer credit to Davidson, coordinates eligibility to continue, certifies graduation qualification, coordinates commencement activities, maintains the College Registry, edits and publishes the Academic Regulations, and chairs the Curriculum Requirements Committee.
