The Distaff Club was founded in 1943 and was first known as the Quadwrangler Wives Club. The purpose of this club was to aid the President and the Administration of Davidon College in every possible way, and to promote the social life of the campus. Membership into the club was open originally only to wives of members of the Quadwranglers Club, a men's faculty group, (See RG 3/1.10a) or anyone acting in the capacity of hostess for any member of the Faculty of Davidson College. By 1977, however, membership was open to any women working for the college as well as to those women married to someone on the college faculty or staff. The following committees were designed to help fulfill the social purpose of the club: Committee for Senior Reception, Committee for the Freshman Reception, Committee for Commencement Flowers, Committee to Nominate New Officers, Guest House Committee, Spring Social Committee and Fall Social Committee. Meetings were held four times a year -- two business and two social. There was an original annual fee of $1.00. Elected offices in the club included the President, Vice-President and Secretary/ Treasurer. Mrs. Cunningham was the first President. Mrs. Schenck was Vice-President and Mrs. McGiel was the first Secretary/Treasurer. On October 11, 1969, the Quadwrangler Wives Club changed their name to the Davidson Distaff Club. The social purpose of the club remained the same. In 1981, the name was changed again from the Davidson Distaff Club to the Davidson College Service Club. . Throughout the years, the primary goal of the club was to enrich the life of Davidson College community. Additional information on the Quadwranglers Wives Club can be found in President Cunningham's records (RG 2/1.13); on the Distaff Club in President Grier Martin's records (RG 2/1.14); and on the Davidson College Service Club in President Spencer's records (RG 2/1.15).
