Biographical / Historical
Davidson College began classes in March 1837. No official faculty minutes were kept until 1845. Summary reports from the first years including names of graduates for each class were prepared and copied into the first ledger. The faculty met weekly from 1845 to 1921, with occasional extra meetings as needed. In the fall of 1921, the meetings moved to monthly sessions. The first mention of an Executive Committee (RG 3/1.2)appears in 1910 with the first minutes appearing in 1912. The Executive Committee minutes were kept in the same ledgers until 1921 when each set of minutes began to be kept separately. The first volume of Faculty Minutes for Davidson College contains the minutes of the Trustees of the Western Carolina College from May 1821 to June 1824. The North Carolina General Assembly authorized the establishment of a college in 1820 and appointed Trustees to oversee it. The Trustees met for 3 years but were unable to raise sufficient funds and the effort was abandoned.
