Scope and Contents

Records of the Office of Institutional Research currently housed in the archives include Administrative (RG 02.29.1), Strategic Plan(RG 02.29.02), Self Study (RG 02.29.03), Surveys (RG02.29.04),External Reports (RG02.29.05) and Stuart Scholar (RG 02.29.6) files. The Administrative files cover the question of investments in South Africa, the College's Sesquicentennial, and early drafts of the Faculty Handbook (1981-1982). The Admissions 1987-1992 contains statistics about SAT scores and tuition comparisons with other schools. It also has information on college buildings including square footage and insurance values. The Cooperative Institutional Research Program Freshman Survey files contain statistics for Davidson including information on racial background, average grades, estimated parental income, religious preferences, student activities, study habits, hours of television watched per week, career plans, probable majors, and parents educations and careers. The Senior Survey 1991-1998 files contain copies of the survey and summaries of responses. The survey covers student satisfaction with a range of college activities from the academic program to the college union, library, athletics and information technology. Several of the series have information about SACS and there are numerous years of Factfiles.

Biographical / Historical

The Director of Institutional Research provides staff support for the office of the President, represents the President on various committees, and coordinates the College's strategic and facilities planning. The office also oversees the gathering and reporting of data for reports to government agencies, publications, and other organizations and coordinates applied research intended to inform institutional planning, policy formulation, and decision making and oversees the Stuart Scholarship program. The office was renamed Planning and Institutional Research in 2000.
