Scope and Contents

This collection includes a wide range of materials detailing the daily operation of College Relations including correspondence, memoranda, printed materials and a committee report. It also contains examples of publications created by the office. The correspondence concerning Davidson's College Bowl appearance on television's G.E. College Quiz Bowl on April 19, 1959. It also contains letters about the launching of the S.S. William L. Davidson on March 24, 1943. Additionally, there is a copy of a report done in June of 1985 by the Ad Hoc Committee to Evaluate the Davidson Communications Office and a memorandum announcing the promotion of Bob Page to the position of News Editor. The file "Two ACPRA Awards" contains articles written by David Cornell and Earl Lawrimore. The Kimmel Correspondence file contains letters written in response to Davidson Journal articles with alumni sharing further stories or criticisms of stories. The College Communications Publicity (RG 5/7.3b) files also contain administrative information about office activities and publication policies.

Biographical / Historical

The Office of College Communications is charged with advancing a true picture of Davidson College to those outside the college community and serving as a communications link between the college and the world abroad. College Communications is also charged with fostering better communication and sense of community within the college itself. The office accomplishes these goals through a comprehensive plan of media relations and coordination of all of the college publications including the publication of internal newsletters such as the "Campus Chronicle" and external sources such as the Davidson Journal. The name of the office was changed from College Relations to College Communications in 1998.
