The office of college treasurer began with the treasurer for the Board of Trustees. Members of the Board were elected periodically to hold of office of treasurer. Faculty members were given the responsibility to act as bursars, collecting student fees and hiring servants. In 1905 the position of treasurer and bursar were combined and Prof. John L. Douglas was elected to handle these duties. Until 1945 the college treasurer remained under the direction of the Trustees. In that year, supervision was divided between the Board and the President's Office. In 1913, Frank Lee Jackson was hired as the College's first business manager and treasurer. Jackson served in that position until 1952. His successor, D. Grier Martin was elected president of Davidson College 1958 and retained the office of treasurer until 1965. In 1965, the College's administrative staff was reorganized. The activities of treasurer-business manager were overseen by Robert Currie. In 1969 the position of Comptroller was added to the Finance Division. The title was changed to Controller in 1990. The Controller's Office is responsible for payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash receipts, cash management and overseeing college investments, bank accounts, and accounting activities for endowments, post-award grants accounting, tax filings, and maintaining student loan files. The office operates under the auspices of the Vice President for Business and Finance.
