Scope and Contents

The documentation folder of this collection contains notecards used in an exhibit about the Mirror and a typescript of a few pages of the document. The Photocopies folder contains a photocopy of the Mirror and of a portion of the typescript of Board of Trustee Minutes for July 14 ,1859. The Mirror contains an orginal copy of the document as it appears in publication, with the exception of pages 11 and 12 which have been removed. A copy of this document is also housed in the UNC-Chapel Hill Library, and pages 11 and 12 have also been removed from that copy.

Biographical / Historical

The Freshman and Junior Mirror was published by the Sophomore class in 1859 at Commencement. This rake ridiculed members of the Freshmen and Juniors by name and almost led to a riot. The Trustees met in special session and extracted apologies from the Sophomores.
