Scope and Contents

The first folder contains two versions of the Sailing club constitution. The second folder (Records, 1966, 1985, 2003-8) consists of a five-page letter from the Sailing Club president Charles H. Robertson, Jr., to the Board of Trustees, in which Robertson asks that the club be allowed to practice and compete on Sundays. Also in the file are excerpts from a letter from the Executive VP of the Inter-Collegiate Yacht Racing Association (ICYRA) that Robertson sent as an enclosure to the letter to the trustees. It states that the Round Robin structure of competitions necessitates Sunday regattas and practices. There is a form of application to become an associate member of the club, circa 1966. There is a roster made by Nancy Blackwell in 1985 listing sailing club student members in 1983-84, 1982-83, 1981-82, 1980-81, 1978-79, 1977-78, and 1976-77. There is also club correspondence beginning in September 2003. The 2006-2007 records contain a Sailing Club Handbook, schedules, email correspondence, and more. The Fall 2007 records include a powerpoint presentation (printed), rosters, schedules, plans, and more. The Spring 2008 records include rosters, a budget request, equipment wish, and more. The third folder (Records and documents 2008-9) contains records from the sailing club, such as rosters, boat inspection sheets, and the student organization registration. The folder also contains documents used by the Sailing club, such as SAISA minutes, an alumni participant list, and forms. The fourth folder (Boat Fundraising, 2009) contains the letter sent to friends and alumni of the program asking for donations toward new boats, and responses mailed back. Folder 5 (2009-2010) contains agendas, emails, ICSA rules, 2009-2012, copies of correspondence from 1966 to the Davidson College Board of Trustees from the then Davidson Sailing Club, a listing by class year of sailing club members, 1986-1982, and a CD-R titled "Club Sailing 2006-2010." The CD-R includes files from 2006-2010, containing rosters, budgets, handbooks, schedules, meeting agendas, and correspondence. There are also photos and files from the club's webpage. --- Digital records include website screen shots and a collection of digital photographs donated to the archives in 2009 (but taken previously). There is also a digital folder containing html pages and images form their new website, created spring 2009. The website also included photo and documents, which are stored separate ( hard copies of the documents are available in the folder "Records and documents 2008-0," and digital copies of the photos are available in the folder "Digital Photo Collection, 2006-9")

Biographical / Historical

Formed in October 1964, the Sailing Club began with six boats and was a non-competitive sport. In March 1966, the president Charles H. Robertson, Jr. wrote a five-page letter to the Board of Trustees in an attempt to allow the students to sail on Sundays. At the time, students were not allowed to participate in sporting activities on Sunday. Upon approval, the club joined the South Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association. Since then, the Sailing Club has been a member of the Southeastern Intercollegiate Sailing Association (SEISA). In 2005, the Davidson College Sailing Team was a member of the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association of North America (ICSA) and districted in the South Atlantic Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association (SAISA). The fleet is comprised of 15 larks, two J/24s, two Lasers, a Hobie 18, and a Narca 5.0, which are docked at the Lake Campus on Lake Norman.
