Scope and Contents

The annual report files contain copies of reports made by Davidson Presidents to the Board of Trustees, the Executive Committee of the Trustees, and to the public. For the period 1923 to 1969 reports were made semi-annually. The first report intended for a public audience was issued in 1962, however no further public reports were made until 1977. The public reports (1977-1993) are issued through the Office of College Relations. After 1977 the reports to the Board of Trustees are housed as part of the President's papers. The annual reports ceased in 1993. A new series of annual financial reports began the the 2003-2004 annual report. The files begin with a handwritten report in 1880 from Andrew Hepburn, seventh president of Davidson College. Reports of prior presidents are included in the Minutes of the Board of Trustees. Complete copies of the President's reports were included in the Board of Trustee minutes until 1906. The reports to the Board and Executive Committee cover enrollment, student activtities, faculty work, finances, the condition of the physical plant, and recommendations for Board actions. Some reports also contain copies of reports prepared by the Dean of Faculty, Business Manager, and Chaplain.
