The collection is organized in the following series: 1) Biographical Information; 2) Addresses; 3) Correspondence; 4) Interviews; 5) Notebooks; 6) Appointment Books; 7) Printed Material; 8) Photographs; and 9) Oversize. The biographical information includes tributes made to him during his life and after his death, information on Dr. Martin's family and information about his wife Louise and her family, including a letter from Eleanor Roosevelt to Mrs. Martin's mother. The addresses include speeches from 1954-1968 discussing Davidson College. The correspondence includes letters from Dean Rusk and Davidson College future president Sam Spencer. There is an interview from 1964 with Frank Rounds of the Duke Endowment. There are two notebooks containing notes for speeches and other thoughts. There are appointment books from 1962-1968. Printed material includes information from Davidson College fundraising campaigns, information about his election, inauguration, resignation, and retirement from the Davidson College Presidency, as well as diplomas and certificates he was awarded. There is a place card signed by president Lyndon B. Johnston, and a menu signed by Dean Rusk from a luncheon at the White House. There are many photographs from 1930-1972, as well as formal portraits, photographs of his family and of the Davidson College President's House. The oversize collection includes honorary diplomas, and inaugural greetings.
