Biographical / Historical

Henry Elias Fries was a member of the Davidson College class of 1878. While a student, he was a member of the Philanthropic Society and was a co-founder of Societas Fratrum. He served in the North Carolina General Assembly in 1887 and as mayor of Salem for three terms. He was a member of the Davidson College Board of Trustees from 1886 to 1891 and helped organize the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts. He founded the Fries Manufacturing and Power Company and later operated an electric streetcar system.
