The collection consists of correspondence, 1864-1930 and printed materials, 1907-1967. The correspondence is mainly personal letters describing Young's social life and family. The printed materials include a wedding announcement, a list of social engagements for May 26-29, 1907 and newspaper clippings about her death and bequest.

Biographical / Historical

Mary Erwin Young was the daughter of Alfred B. and Mary Elizabeth Young. Born in Lincoln County, North Carolina, she moved to Davidson in 1905 and lived there until her death. She was active in a number of clubs and societies. A graduate of Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Georgia, she was interested in art and music. She bequeathed her one million dollar estate to agencies of the Prebyterian Church, including the Presbyterian Orphan Home at Barium Springs and Davidson College.
