Scope and Contents

The collection consists of legal and financial materials, a student notebook, and family history files. The legal materials (1862-1883) include a will and a certificate of character for Valentine Stirewalt. The financial materials (1853-1878) include store receipts and a register of boarders at Catawba Springs. The student notebook (1842-1843) is Valentine Stirewalt's mathematics exercises. The family history is a photocopy of genealogical and family ancedotal information for several generations of the Stirewalt family. It includes some reminiscences of the Civil War years. Photographs related to the family are housed in the Local History Photograph Collection (see DC0139s-1 to DC0139s-8.

Biographical / Historical

Valentine Stirewalt (1824-1907) married Sarah Ann Hampton in 1849. They had 4 children: Walter Hampton (1849), Elizabeth Caroline (1853), Sarah Ann (1857), and Byrum (1859). The family lived and managed businesses in Catawba Springs and Statesville, North Carolina.
