The collection consists of a certificate from Washington College (now Washington and Lee University) conferring upon Vinson the title of Distinguished Undergraduate. The certificate is dated 22 June 1871 and is signed by Robert E. Lee. Lee was president of Washington College until his death in 1870.

William Daniel Vinson was a professor of mathematics at Davidson College from 1883 to 1897. The 1897 yearbook listed him as the students most popular and most intellectual professor.
