The collection consists of a handwritten account of Smith's recollections of his student days. The account was written for Miss Cornelia Shaw in 1920.

Biographical / Historical

William Alexander Smith attended Davidson College from 1859 to 1861. He left college to serve in the Confederate Army. He was wounded in the war and returned to the college in 1863. He was graduated in 1865 and was a merchant and farmer in Ansonville, North Carolina. He published two books: a regimental history entitled "The Anson Guards" and a genealogy of the Smith family. Copies of the books are housed in the Davidsoniana Room.
