Biographical / Historical

Mary Scofield Clifford was raised in Davidson and Mt. Mourne, North Carolina. Her father, John N. Scofield, was the contrator for the building of Old Chambers. Her mother later ran a boarding house for students and had Woodrow Wilson as one of her boarders. Clifford was tutored by Davidson faculty and attended the Lincolnton Female Seminary. She married Branch Greenleaf Clifford, Davidson College class of 1870 and together they founded and ran the Clifford Female Seminary in Union, SC.
