Helper and Sloan Collection
Scope and Contents
The collection contains the following: (1) invoices from 1867-1873, (2) Letters, (3) Helper Store Ledger, 1852-1854, (4) Helper Store Ledger, 1854-1855, and (5) Helper Store Ledger, 1896-1897. The collection of letters contain an interested xeroxed copy of a letter written by Hanson Pinckney Helper that describes the town of Davidson and all its business. The letters also contain correspondence with Miss Lillie Munroe Helper, a funeral ribbon for Miss Hattie Thompson, and a letter of recommendation for Miss Pauline Helper. The Helper Store Ledger from 1852-1854 contains a newspaper article discussing the donation of the ledger to the Davidson College Archives. All of the ledgers provide interesting information about the town of Davidson and the demands that the town placed on this dry goods shop.
