Scope and Contents

While a student at Davidson College, James Westall kept a scrapbook of his various memories. He included information from his high school, Asheville High School, as well as a vast amount of information on the Davidson Golf Team from 1932-1939. In the file folder marked "Photographs," one can find photographs of students playing golf in the mid-1930's and several photographs of Phi Delta Theta members in the mid-1930's. In the file folder marked "Miscellaneous," one can find the notations for the minutes of Phi Delta Theta from 1932, James Westall's diploma from Phi Delta Theta, and a letter from the Athletic Assocaition dated 1937. In the file folder marked "Golf Information," one can find golf tee cards from various golfing clubs in the eastern United States and xeroxed copies of various newspaper announcement concerning the Davidson Golf Team in 1934-1935. Individual items in the scrapbook are listed below.

Biographical / Historical

A native of Asheville, NC, Westall was educated at the Asheville High School and graduated from Davidson College in 1937. While at Davidson, Westall was an active member of Phi Delta Theta and an avid golf player. He was also a member of Davidson's R.O.T.C. program. In 1941, Westall enlisted in the U.S. Army and was commissioned in 1942 in one of the few officer candidate schools overseas, in Noumea, New Caledonia. Following combat service, which included duty with the 246th Field Artillery Battalion of the Americal Divison, Westall was released from active duty at the end of World War II with the rank of captain. He was active in the Army Reserve, attaining the rank of lieutenant colonel. Westall was also a graduate of the Claude Love Law School in Asheville, NC. He was associated with his family in the building materials business until 1956. He eventually became vice president of the Earle-Chesterfield Mill Co. and J.M. Westall & Co. He also was president and chairman of the board of Asheville Federal Savings and Loan Association. Westall died on October 12, 1976.
