William Stewart Buchanan Scrapbook
Scope and Contents
During his student years (both at Davidson and prior), Buchanan kept a scrapbook. Included in this scrapbook are pictures taken in Japan and China, pictures of various women that he met, pictures of Buchanan with his friends, and a photograph of a man suffering "hazing." There is also an invitation to attend an event at Flora MacDonald College. Because Buchanan lived in Japan prior to attending Davidson, several of the pages of his scrapbook are donated to the island and contain picture of Fuji Mountain. Biographical / Historical
William Stewart Buchanan graduated from Davidson College in 1923. He came to the college from Gifu, Japan (supposedly, his parents were missionaries). As a student, Buchanan was invovled in musical groups on campus, a member of Omicron Delta Kappa, Gamma Sigma Epsilon, Sigma Upsilon, Le Cercle Francais and was editor of the Quips and Cranks. He majored in chemistry with a minor in education and mathematics. After graduating, he worked for R.J. Reynolds Tobbaco Company. He married Nadenina Gibson and produced two children, Robert William Buchanan (1956) and Clara Jane.
