Scope and Contents
These files contain the research materials collected by Dr. Davidson for his research in writing The Plantation World Around Davidson. The files contain a vast amount of information on local history including the areas of Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, Catawba County, Iredell County, and Gaston County. Information on well-known families of the 19th century in these counties is located here. Most of the files contain newspaper clippings, photographs, and genealogy research on the families of the various plantations. Dr. Davidson was assisted by Mary Boyer in collecting information on the plantations and her name appears throughout the files, but most specifically in the slides that she made of the plantations around Davidson. Box 1 contains a vast amount of information on the history of Charlotte, NC. Please see individual folder titles for subjects covered in the files. Box 2 contains a file marked "Cedar Grove Plantation - Houston Johnston - Mecklenburg County, NC" that contains information on slave interactions with their owners. Box 4 contains a file marked "Forest Dell Plantation - Ephraim Brevard - Iredell County, NC" that contains information on slavery. The file marked "Henkel, C. V." contains information on mills (cotton) in North Carolina. Box 6 contains information on mills (cotton) in Long Creek, NC. The file folders marked "Long Creek, NC - History of" and "Long Creek Mill and Whitley Store" contain information on the Whitley Mill. The OVERSIZE contains a map showing the location of Plantation Homes in the Catawba River Valley in the 1840's. This is a drawing that was designed for Dr. Davidson's book: The Plantation World Around Davidson. It depicts Lincolnton, Vesuvius Furnace, Mt. Tirzah, Ingleside, Elm Wood, Latta Place, Hopewell Church, Charlotte, Dr. Caldwell's, Rosedal, Oak Lawn, Cedar Grove, Glenwood, Rural Hill, Unity Church, Center Church, Mt. Mourne, and Catawba Springs.

Chalmers Gaston Davidson was born in Chester, South Carolina and graduated summa cum laude from Davidson in 1928. He completed graduate degrees at Harvard, and then returned to Davidson to serve as professor of history, library director and archivist for 58 years. He died on June 25, 1994 at the age of 87. Dr. Davidson's life's work was the study of regional history and service to Davidson College. He published several books including The Plantation World Around Davidson. This book focuses on prestigious families and their plantations in Mecklenburg, Catawba, Iredell and Gaston Counties.
