Scope and Contents

The collection consists of Mr. Bradham's selections from his personal research in South Carolina history. The Capers article contains an exposition by Bishop William Capers of the Methodist Episcopal Church of Charleston, S.C. in 1833 of a disagreement between himself, church laity and the church's governing body over the issue of the seating of slaves and free persons of color in the church. Two copies of a transcript by Mr. Bradham of a Catechism for children and "for use on the mission of slaves" written by Bishop Capers are included in separate folders. The original Catechism resides at the South Carolinana Library at the the University of South Carolina in Columbia, S.C. An additional folder contains a paper by Thomas Kemmerlin, Jr. read at the May 10, 1997 meeting of the Society of the High Hills of Santee, on the misadventures of Rev. Mr. Charles Woodson, an itinerant Anglican minister of St. Mark's Parish, for two years beginning June 10, 1766.
