Scope and Contents

The collection consists of correspondence and telegrams for commencement exercises (1934-1937). Also includes correspondence (1942-1950) primarily relating to the Wildcat Club and development activities, programs (1936-1992) and publications recognizing his achievements and two scrapbooks. The correspondence documents the athletic boosterism by alumni and the creation of the Wildcat Club. There are letters from the Alumni Office, the President's office and from Davidson coaches. The scrapbooks including extensive clippings on the Davidson football team while Armfield was on the team, photographs and souvenirs from Davidson activities and his post-graduation trip to Europe. His Davidson letter sweater is housed with the artifact collection (A270).

Biographical / Historical

Edward Armfield , Davidson class of 1937, attended the McAllie school before attending Davidson. While at Davidson, he played on the football team, was a member of SAE, Omicron Delta Kappa, and the Eumenean Literary Society. After graduation worked in Greensboro, NC for Adams-Mills, Burlington Mills and later started his own company Armtex, Inc. He was actively involved in Alumni programs, Development campaigns and the creation of the Wildcat Club (now Davidson Athletic Foundation). He received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1987 and was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame in 1992. He died in 1999.
