Scope and Contents
The collection consists of the handwritten copies of the papers Mrs. Thies gave as programs for the Twentieth Century Book Club. Some files also contain clippings and illustrative material used in for the papers. The file on Elizabeth Gray Vining contains correspondence from Ms. Vining. While the papers are primarily on literary topics, there are papers on the Japanese internment during World War II, on conditions in Siberia in 1927and Manchuria in 1933, and on social issues such as divorce. The collection also contains a gas ration card from World War II.

Biographical / Historical
Coline Munroe Thies was born in Durham, North Carolina in 1891. She was graduated from the Woman's College of the University of North Carolina in 1914. She married Davidson College Professor Oscar Julius Thies, Jr.in 1921. She was an active member of Davidson College Presbyterian Church and is remembered for her work with the Sunday School library. She was also an active member of the Twentieth Century Book Club until her death in 1960.
