Scope and Contents

In addition to the typescript of the diary, there is a brief biography and photocopies of two photographs: one of McMichael in uniform and one of his home near Buena Vista, Georgia. The diary recounts his experiences after capture, describing the conditions in the prisons and in traveling between the prisons. It also includes copies of letters he received while a prisoner and lists of prisoners and the Roll of Company K 12th Georgia regiment.

Biographical / Historical

James Robert McMichael was born near Talbotlton, Georgia in 1835. He served in the Confederate Army, rising to rank of Captain in 1863. He was captured at Spottsylvania, May 10, 1864 and held as a prisoner of war at Ford Delware, Morris Island, and Cockspur Island until his release June 16, 1865. After the war, he married Elvira Amanda Stevens in 1866 and attended the Medical College of the University of Georgia. He worked as a physician and a farmer. He served in the Georgia State Legislature 1886-1887. He died in Buena Vista, Georgia April 30, 1893.
