Scope and Contents

The collection consists of a thirty-six page typescript of his recollections as he wrote them on his 77th birthday and a manuscript family tree. He titled his memoir "The Story of a Pioneer: Personal Recollections of William Lee Scroggs, April the Third, 1893."

Biographical / Historical

William Lee Scroggs (Davidosn College class of 1840) is the father-in-law of Daniel Ralph Freeman (Davidson College class of 1920) and grandfather of Robert Orr Freeman (Davidson College class of 1947) and David Ralph Freeman (Davidson College class of 1955). Born and raised in Iredell County, NC, he attended the Rocky River Academy before attending Davidson College. He attended Davidson for two years and then moved west for his health. He became a merchant and probate judge in Des Orc, Arkansas and Dade County, Missouri. He traveled to Califoria in the 1850s and died in Missouri in 1894.
