Flowe Family Papers
Scope and Contents
The collection consists of copies from 3 bibles. The bibles are housed within the library's Rare Book Room. The copies include the title page from an 1846 New Testament presented to Samuel K. Pharr at Chimborazo hospital; family history pages from the Samuel King (Iredell County) family bible; family history pages and photographs from the D.W. and S. J. Flowe Bible. The family pages contains lists of births, deaths and marriages with the earliest entry being 1776 and the latest 1943.

Biographical / Historical
Materials relate to the King, Flowe, and Pharr families of Mecklenburg and Iredell counties, North Carolina. Represented in the records are Davidson College alumni Samuel K Pharr (1847), James Junius Pharr (1863), Henry Winslow Pharr (1854), and William Winslow Flowe (1895). After graduating from Davidson, William W. Flowe first worked in a bank and then opened a retail store of White-Morrison-Flowe in Concord before becoming involved in textile manufacturing. At the time of his death he was president of both Hugh Grey Hosiery and Hoover Hosiery Mill as well as secretary-treasurer of both Roberta and White Parks mills. He served as president of the Concord alumni chapter and his son William, Jr attended Davidson, class of 1929. A scholarship was established in 1984 to honor William Sr. and in 1994 one of the college's senior apartments was named Flowe Residence Hall in honor of the family. A plaque on the building reads: This building named in appreciation of Harry G. and Mary Lore Flowe Brown -- 1994; Remembering three generations of a distinguished Concord, N.C. family: William W. Flowe (Class of 1895) and Mary Lore Flowe; William W. Flowe, Jr., Class of 1929, Harry G. and Mary Lore Flowe Brown; William Flowe Brown.
