Rene de Visme Williamson Collection
Scope and Contents
The collection consists of typescripts of letters written by Williamson and an interview between Williamson and Davidson College President John Cunningham on the subject of Williamson leaving Davidson and conditions at the college during World War II, a typescript copy of an address, "The Challenge of Christian Higher Education," delivered by Williamson at Davidson College in 1973; and photocopies of nineteenth-century French documents relating to this history and genealogy of the De Visme family.

Biographical / Historical
Rene De Visme, originally from Chicago, attended and graduated from Rugters in 1931. He attend graduate school at Harvard receiving his Ph.D in 1935. He began his teaching career at Princeton (1935-1937) and later taught at Davidson College (1937-1944), Beloit College (1944-1945), University of Tennessee (1945-1954), and Louisiana State University. He specialized in Political Science. His books include Politics and Protestant Theology: An Interpretation of Tillich, Barth, Bonhoeffer, and Brunner; Independence and Involvement: A Christian Reorientation in Political Science; Culture and Policy: The United States and the Hispanic World; and The Integrity of the Gospel: A Critique of Liberation Theology.
