Scope and Contents

The collection consists of the scrapbook Simpson kept as a Davidson student. The scrapbook begins with quotes and comments from fellow students, Simpson's reflections on the faculty and classes he took. It also contains numerous candid photographs of college life, tickets and programs for college events, newspaper clippings for sports events, including coverage of races at the new Charlotte Speedway. It also contains a comic section on coeducation with Simpson using magazine cutouts and captions to play with the idea. There is also a telegram with an offer to play basebal in Hartford

Biographical / Historical

Albert Franklin Simpson (1904-1971) graduated from Davidson college in 1925. While a student, he was member of Kappa Alpha fraternity, Sigma Upsilon, the Spanish Club, Georgia Club, Pandenic Society, International Relations Club and the Publications Board. He played varsity baseball and lettered and he was on the staff of the Davidsonian, the college magazine, and the literary editor for the annual. He also served as an English Assistant and a Bible Class leader. A native of Washington, Georgia, his busy college career led to graduate school and later work as the Air Force Historian from 1946 to 1969. There is an Albert F. Simpson Historical Research Center at Maxwell Air Force Base in Alabama, name for him in 1972.
