Scope and Contents

The collection consists of 8 scrapbooks, newsletters and early organizational documents. The scrapbooks document society activities and local history and are oganized by the DHS's program year which runs fall to spring. The first scrapbook is for September 1993 to June 1994. They contain copies of printed programs and promotional materials for events sponsored by DHS, photographs taken at DHS events, membership lists, newletters, some board minutes, letters written by elementary school children after town tours, and information about oral history programs. Along with documenting the work of DHS, the scrapbooks contain photographs of town buildings and of local events, such as juggling on the town green and newsclippings from local papers. The clippings include articles on historical topics and also current news events. There are also copies of the town governent newsletters and special newspaper inserts on the area. The 2001-2002 scrapbook contains a few original documents incuding a 1909 insurance form for a downtown building and a program for 1944 building dedication The box with the 2004-2005 scrapbook also includes beginning of the 2005-2006 scrapbook. There is also a folder with correspondence, agendas and a constitution and a folder of DHS newsletters, 2003-2011.

Biographical / Historical

The Davidson Historical Society was founded in the late 1980s and was led by Irene and Taylor Blackwell. The society presents programs about area history, has done exhibits for Christmas in Davidson, created walking tours and booklets, placed stone markers on Main Street and also promoted historic markers on homes in Davidson.
