Scope and Contents

Oral history interview with Derry Harper '76. Mordecai Scott, Davidson College class of 2010, interviewed Derry Harper, Davidson College class of 1976, on November 7, 2009 in the Alvarez Student Union on the Davidson College campus. Harper participated in a panel discussion hosted by the Alumni Association that morning. Harper served Davidson College in a number of capacities after graduation, including as the Alumni Association President and President of the Board of Trustees. In his interview, Harper discusses his experiences in the Humanities Program, his time as an exchange student at Howard University, the North Carolina Fellows Program, and intramural sports. Harper names several professors and administrators, including President Samuel Spencer, Dean of Students Will Terry, Vice President of Academic Affairs John Bevin, Dr. Earl Edmondson, and Dr. John Kelton. Harper details feelings of social isolation, rigorous academics, serving as the Black Student Coalition President, coeducation, and how Davidson prepared him for life beyond college.
