Scope and Contents

Oral history interview with Janet Stovall '85. Davidson College student Amanda Menjivar interviewed Janet Stovall, class of 1985, on November 7, 2009 on the campus of Davidson College. Stovall discusses her experiences as a student in the early 1980s, what led her to Davidson, and life beyond college. Stovall references organizations like the Black Student Coalition (she served as the president of the organization during her senior year) and the R.A.C.E. Committee. Stovall also spends time discussing faculty-student and staff-student dynamics, the strained relationship between the college and Davidson’s African American community, feelings of social isolation, as well as the life-long friendships and important connections she made as a result of her time at Davidson College. Stovall reflects on how the college has changed since her time as a student, while also mentioning the impact of individuals like Dr. Anthony (Tony) Abbott, Dr. John Kuykendall, Dr. Cynthia Lewis, Dr. Charles Dockery, and Reverend Brenda Tapia.
