Oral history interview with Lenny McAllister '93. Davidson College student Rayna McKenzie interviewed Leonard [Lenny] McAllister, Jr., Davidson College class of 1993, on November 7, 2009 on the Davidson College campus. McAllister discusses the differences between his experience as a student in the early 1990s and his experiences after he returned to complete his degree between 2000 and 2002 while raising two young children. McAllister talks about how he experienced racially-motivated threats after writing a piece about Black History Month in the college newspaper, as well as incidents after the Rodney King Simi Valley decision. He mentions the importance of intramural basketball, the culture of Patterson Court, facing Hurricane Hugo, and significant individuals like Dr. Janet Shannon, Reverend Brenda Tapia, and Dr. Sally McMillen. McAllister also describes the impact of fellow students like Anthony Foxx, Sohn Sims, and his wife, Lannie Bennett, in terms of his decision to return to Davidson and shifting connections to college life as an alumnus.
