Scope and Contents

This interview was conducted by Eileen Dwyer '99 to support her research paper "Women's Athletics at Davidson College: Grassroots Movement and Institutional Support".

Jessica Montrella was a student athlete at Davidson College, where she played on the women’s basketball team from 1995 to 1999. In this interview, she discusses how she became interested in basketball and the impact that her interest in sports had on her relationship to her family. She then talks about the differences in coaching styles between her high school coach and the coaching team at Davidson College. Montrella then recounts her experiences as a female athlete that have revealed the unfair preference that college administration has towards men’s athletic teams over women’s teams. She concludes by elaborating on the shortcomings of the coaching on Davidson’s women’s basketball team and how their mismanagement limits the athletic development of their players.
