The first courses in Sociology at Davidson College were offered in the 1930s. Professor Price Gwynn taught sociology along with education courses. In 1947, Charles Brooks Anderson became the first faculty to specialize in sociology. Dr. George Douglas replaced Anderson in 1949 and by 1950 the program had grown to eight course offerings, including an introductory anthropology class. Sociology remained a one-faculty department until the 1970s, when it expanded to four faculty. The department name also expanded in 1978-79 to become Sociology and Anthropology. In 1986-87, the department was renamed Anthropology and Sociology. By 1995, the department had grown to seven faculty and over 45 courses. The departments separated in Spring 1998. For the 1999-2000 academic year the Sociology Department had four faculty and over twenty course offerings.
