Biographical / Historical

Created under the direction of Dr. William Hight, July Experience was established in 1976 as a college-preparation summer school for high school students. Originally a four-week program, students took classes from Davidson College faculty designed to introduce them to college level studies. The number of students has grown from 45 in 1976 to 73 in 1993. Approximately 30 percent of the students in each summer session go on to attend Davidson College. Project Excel was a joint program sponsored by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools for student leadership development. Davidson College, Queens College, UNC-Charlotte, and Johnson C. Smith University offered academic courses and leadership training for rising seniors attending high school in Mecklenburg County, NC. Davidson College participated in the program from 1980 to 1986.
