The Faculty Library Committee was organized in 1887 with the formation of the college's Union Library. The Union Library combined the collections of the college's library with those of the Philanthropic and Eumenean Literary Societies. The committee was initially responsible for developing policies and overseeing the staffing and operation of the library. After the hiring of a professional librarian in 1905, the committee's work focused on fines and auditing accounts. The committee also conferred with the librarian about the selection of books and journals and to address library policy issues.
