Biographical / Historical
The inauguration of Davidson College's 16th President, Robert Fredrick Vagt, occurred on October 3rd, 1997 at 11 o'clock on the Chambers Lawn. Trustees, alumni, faculty, representatives from colleges and universities all over the country, former Governors of the State of North Carolina and the students of Davidson College attended the event. Two major events were planned for the inauguration. On October 2nd from 5:30-7:30pm, a party celebrating President Vagt was held at Vail Commons. Dinner (grilled steak) was served free to all students, there was a band, and the Turstees of the College ate with the students. On October 3rd at 11am, a tremendous academic procession began the inaugural ceremonies. Included in this procession was faculty, trustees, representatives from other colleges, and 200 students representing the Classes of 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2001. Following the ceremony, a campus wide luncheon was held on the grounds between Davidson College Presbyterian Church and Cunningham Fine Arts Building. Dr. Leland M. Park, Director of E. H. Little Library, was selected as coordinator of the Inauguration.
