The collection contains an assortment of covers, postmarked envelopes, from 1839 to 1899, arranged chronologically. The bulk of the collection consists of 27 covers with various Davidson College, N.C. postmarks and includes 6 illuminated covers decorated with engravings of the Old Chambers Building. Three additional covers with Davidson College, N.C. postmarks are mounted individually on sheets with notes and were assembled by Paul Freeland (1925). One of these is one of the illuminated covers. Eleven additional covers are addressed to the town of Davidson College. Five of these are addressed to J.Lee Sloan, Jr., two to Linden Mfg. Co. and one of them is addressed to Mrs. A.D.Hepburn, wife of Andrew Dousa Hepburn, president of Davidson College (1877-1885.) Also included in the collection are 4 letters and 1 receipt which are all examples of folded letters which were addressed and mailed without envelopes. One 1839 letter is from Reynold B. Price (1844) whose notebook already resides in the library archive. A photocopy of this letter is in the archives collection file. The other 1839 letter is from James Morrow (1843) and contains a record of purchases from Sparrow's store. A letter from 1846, signed by E.C. Stewart (1847), A.M. Watson (1848) and A.Enloe (1848) is an appeal from these members of the building committee of the Eumenean Society for funds from an honorary member. The letter from 1850 is from Mr. H. Pinkney Helper. Mr. Hanson Pinckney Helper was postmaster of the town of Davidson College from approximately 1856 to 1870. Mr. Helper is best known as the owner of Helper's Hotel, later known as the Carolina Inn. The receipt is addressed to an H. Hill, A.B.C.F.M and regards Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts.
