Scope and Contents

The collection consists of an autographed copy of a speech given at Davidson College (1986), correspondence (1958-1986), literary materials (1942), Robert Phillips correspondence & reminiscences (1981-2009) and printed material (1943-1990). The correspondence includes photocopies of letters sent by Styron as well as original letters to Dr. Chalmers Davidson. The literary materials are essays written while Styron was a student at Davidson College. The Phillips file contains three letters written by Styron to his college classmate Robert Phillips (1948) and Phillips handwritten memories of his friendship with Styron. The printed materials include copies of student publications, newsclippings and articles about Styron.

Biographical / Historical

William Styron attended Davidson College from 1942 to 1943. He was graduated from Duke University in 1947. A novelist, his works include The Confessions of Nat Turner, Sophie's Choice, and Lie Down in Darkness.
