Scope and Contents

Thea Princewill (nee Nethea Rhinehardt) graduated from Davidson with a degree in Biology in 1993. Shortly after this oral history interview, the interviewee legally changed their name from Nethea Rhinehardt to Thea Princewill. During the interview, Thea discusses her experience dating and coming to terms with her sexuality in her time at Davidson and in the years after graduation. Thea’s story includes her relationships to other Black women and women of color, to Black men, and to queer white men during her time on campus and her struggle to be supported by the college administration. Her experience highlights the discrepancies experienced by Black women students on campus, from the classroom to the social circles of Patterson Court. Princewill mentions Brenda Tapia, John Kuykendall, Janet Stovall, and Dr. Magdalena Maiz-Pena by name. The interview was conducted as part of an Associated Colleges of the South (ACS) grant-funded course led by Dr. Rose Stremlau.
