Scope and Contents

Interview of Dr. Max E. Polley by John P. Scherer (Class of 1989) as part of his senior project for the history department. Polley describes the Vietnam War issue on Davidson’s campus through the late 1960s and early 1970s. Polley discusses student-faculty relations, faculty-admin relations, activism, civil rights, conscientious objectors, and compulsory ROTC and vespers and chapel attendance.

Biographical / Historical

Max Eugene Polley (1928-2014) was born in South Bend, Indiana. He received an A.B. from Albion College and a B.D. and Ph.D. from Duke University. Polley served as the J.W. Cannon Professor of Religion at Davidson College from 1956 to 1993.
