Biographical / Historical

The office of Institutional Advancement has a dual mission: To communicate with external constituecies (alumni, parents, friends, business and industries) and the college community the goals, objectives, news and events of Davidson. To involve these same constituencies in the life of Davidson College. Included within the auspices of Institutional Advancement are the offices of Alumni Relations, College Relations, Advancement Services, Development, Davidson Athletic Foundation, and WDAV, the college radio station. While the alumni office dates from 1926, the first full-time development staff was hired in 1955. Prior to that time, the President and Board of Trustees were primarily responsible for handling endowments and fundraising campaigns. In 1962, a reorganization within the Business Office combined the offices of Public Relations, Development, and Alumni Relations. In 1975, the office was separated from Business and Finance and operated under the direction of the Vice President for Development. The position was renamed Vice President for Institutional Advancement in 1990. The office was renamed College Relations in 2000 with the former office of College Relations becoming College Communications.
